AMY, the revelatory new documentary on the life and career of the late Amy Winehouse, will have its UK premiere at next week’s Edinburgh International Film Festival. The film was officially unveiled at last month’s Cannes Film Festival to a flurry of five star reviews, with critics singling it out as the outstanding documentary at the festival.

The Edinburgh screening of AMY will take place on the 18th of June and will be attended by director Asif Kapadia, whose previous film Senna won BAFTAs for Best Documentary and Outstanding British Film in 2010, and will give the British public their first chance to see this moving portrait of one of the enduring icons of 21st century music, whose indelible vocals and painfully honest songwriting continue to resonate with fans around the world. Festival attendees will also have a second chance to catch the film at a subsequent screening on the 20th of June in the same venue.

The EIFF programme calls AMY an “An absorbing, moving, insightful and powerful documentary…that charts the amazing highs and terrible lows in the life of the wonderfully talented but terribly troubled Amy Winehouse…Great use of home video, camera phones, archive footage and interviews combine to craft a mesmerising – and often very sad – film brimming with magical musical moments, offering a remarkable portrait of a wonderful talent.

Established in 1947, the Edinburgh International Film Festival is world renowned for discovering and promoting the very best in international cinema – and for heralding and debating changes in global filmmaking. Intimate in its scale, ambitious in its scope, and fuelled by pure passion for cinema in all its manifestations, EIFF seeks to spotlight the most exciting and innovative new film talent, in a setting steeped in history.

This year’s Edinburgh Film Festival takes place from the 17th to the 28th of June. See http://www.edfilmfest.org.uk/ for details and tickets.

AMY opens in cinemas around the UK and Ireland on the 3rd of July.
