Lady Macbeth wins six awards at BIFA and EFA over the weekend

Lady Macbeth, picked up five awards at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) and the European Film Awards (EFA) over the weekend. The film won Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Most Promising Newcomer at the BIFA’s and won the European Discovery Award at the EFA’s in Berlin.

Directed by acclaimed theatre director William Oldroyd, produced by Irish filmmaker Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly and starring Florence Pugh and Cosmo Jarvis, the film is based on Nikolai Leskov’s nineteenth century novella Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Rural England in 1865, Katherine (Florence Pugh) is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and his cold, unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

LADY MACBETH was a huge hit on the festival circuit, where it picked up a host of audience and performance awards at Toronto,LFF, San Sebastian, Zurich, Glasgow and Dublin.
