Pieter-Jan De Pue’s THE LAND OF THE ENLIGHTENED picked up the Sundance World Cinema Documentary Competition: Special Jury Award for Cinematography over the weekend.

The documentary which had its world premiere at the prestigious festival charts the complex Afghani war economy told through the eyes of the children who have found themselves caught up in the on-going American occupation.

Screen Daily’s review of the film praised the cinematography saying that the film captures “visual magic” with landscapes that are “desperately stark and staggeringly picturesque” and “caravans spied from afar in barren valleys seem motionless in a still frame, like scenes from Chinese landscape paintings from centuries ago.”

The co-production was produced by Morgan Bushe for Fastnet Films together with Savage Film, Submarine, Eyeworks and Gerbrueder Beetz Produktion.

The Land of the Enlightened will be released in Irish cinemas by Wildcard Distribution later this year.
