Wildcard Distribution to partner with Altitude Film Entertainment for release of the feature documentary AMY
Wildcard Distribution is delighted to announce the Irish cinema release of the feature documentary AMY, which explores the life and career of the late Amy Winehouse. Wildcard will partner with Altitude Film Entertainment for the distribution of the film in Ireland.
From award-winning director Asif Kapadia (Senna), Amy is an intimate portrait of the troubled singer, whose second album Back To Black sold over 20m copies worldwide and whose tragic early death in 2011 sent fans around the globe into mourning.
The documentary had its official unveiling at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday and critics have been quick to praise it; with The Guardian’s five star review describing it as “stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and almost mesmerically absorbing” and dubbing it a “masterpiece”, The Independent calling it “”brilliant”, while Deadline named the film as the early favourite for the Best Documentary Oscar.
Painstakingly assembled from extensive archive material, including the star’s own home movies, photographs, handwritten song lyrics, early demos of some of her most famous songs, as well as personal recollections from friends, family members, and creative collaborators, AMY is an emotionally searching and honest depiction of an extraordinary talent, whose battles with addiction would end with her promising career cut painfully short at the age of just 27.
Speaking about the release, Wildcard CEO Patrick O’Neill said “We’re extremely honoured to be working on this magnificent film. Amy Winehouse remains an icon, but Asif Kapadia’s film reveals the all too human fragility of the woman behind the headlines. It’s both a powerful meditation on the pitfalls of fame and a moving celebration of a once in a lifetime artist.”
Altitude Film Entertainment’s Head of Distribution Hamish Moseley said “We’re thrilled to be working with Wildcard Distribution to bring Amy to Irish audiences. With rave reviews continuing to pour out of Cannes Film Festival, we’re extremely proud to be support Asif Kapadia’s intimate and moving documentary on arguably one of the most important cultural icons of the 21st Century.”
The new trailer for the film goes live on its official website – www.amyfilm.co.uk – today at 1pm.
AMY will be released in Irish cinemas on July 3rd 2015.
