Wildcard Distribution have acquired the rights to the excellent European films L’Apparition and Under The Tree which are both scheduled for an Irish cinema release in the coming months.

From Xavier Giannoli, the director of Maguerite, The Singer and In the Beginning, comes the French film L’Apparition.

Jacques (played by Vincent Lindon) is a French journalist whose reputation as an impartial and talented investigator attracts the attention of the Vatican who recruits him for a special task; taking part of a committee to investigate the veracity of a saintly apparition in a small French village.  Upon his arrival, he meets the young and sensitive Anna who claims to have personally witnessed the apparition of the Virgin Mary. A profound devout, she’s garnered an impressive following in the village and is torn between her faith and the many solicitations she receives.  Confronted with opposing views from clergy members and sceptics in the group, Jacques gradually uncovers the hidden motivations and pressures at work and sees his beliefs system profoundly shaken.

From Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson comes the Icelandic quirky comedy Under The Tree.  When Baldwin and Inga’s next-door neighbours complain that a tree in their backyard casts a shadow over their sundeck, what starts off as a typical spat between neighbours in the suburbs unexpectedly and violently spirals out of control.

The film premiered at the highly prestigious Venice Film Festival last year and was nominated for the festival’s Horizon’s Award for Best Film.  Since then has been accumulating awards at festivals all over the world including Fantastic Fest (Jury Award Best Director, Comedy Feature), Austin Fantastic Fest (Best Director Comedy Features) and Denver International Film Festival (Best Film).

Both L’Apparition and Under The Tree will be released in Irish cinemas in 2018.
