The Galway Film Fleadh announced their programme last night with four Wildcard titles screening over the six day festival.

The feature films The Young Offenders and Cardboard Gangsters will have their world premieres at the festival while it marks the Irish premiere for the documentaries Bobby Sands:  66 Days and Land of the Enlightened.  All four films are scheduled to be released in cinemas later this year.

Inspired by Ireland’s biggest cocaine seizure of €440 million off the coast of Cork in 2007, THE YOUNG OFFENDERS is a comedy which follows two Cork inner-city teenagers, Conor and Jock, as they embark on a 160km road trip on stolen bikes in the hopes of finding an unrecovered bale of coke.  Written and directed by Peter Foott, the film will be released in Irish cinemas in September.

Mark O’Connor’s gritty CARDBOARD GANGSTERS stars John Connors as a small time drug dealer who, together with his group of cardboard gangsters attempts to gain control of the drug trade in Darndale, chasing the glorified lifestyle of money, power and sex.

BOBBY SANDS: 66 DAYS, directed by Brendan J Byrne, is a cinematic portrait of the Irish Republican martyr’s epic 66-day hunger strike that grabbed the world’s attention in the early 1980’s.  The documentary which had its world premiere this week at Hot Docs in Toronto is the story of his hunger strike in what became the epicentre of one of the most defining moments of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

Pieter-Jan De Pue’s documentary THE LAND OF THE ENLIGHTENED charts the complex Afghani war economy told through the eyes of the children who have found themselves caught up in the on-going American occupation. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year where it picked up the World Cinema Cinematography Award for a Documentary.
